Coated in a honey nougat, it has a balance of sweetness and satisfying almond flavor. Since 1775 the confectioners at Vicens have made this turrn by hand in the town of Agramunt. Originally a Christmas treat, it is now enjoyed all year long as a healthy, delicious nibble to be served with coffee or tea. The recipe starts with a hot kettle where honey, egg white and cane sugar are blended together. Freshly roasted whole almonds are poured in and mixed by hand with a paddle, then scooped onto a table. While still warm, each piece of turrn is formed by hand and labeled with the Vicens brand. Agramunt crunchy round turrn is enjoyed across Spain as a sweet treat or light dessert. Vicens was founded in 1775 in the town of Agramunt in Catalonia. This special candy has protected status (PGI) to protect its quality and the candy-making tradition from inferior imitations. Turrn in this status must follow strict traditional methods and has to come from the town of Agramunt. In 2016, the master turrn maker at Vicens, Angel Velasco, was awarded the title of Best Pastry Chef in the World at the prestigious Madrid Fusion food show. He was joined on stage by famed pastry chef Albert Adri, who collaborated with him to create a line of dynamic new turrn flavors, such as Gin Tonic and Arroz con Leche, which are available at La Tienda.
