Scotch broom is a perennial plant with numerous branches. Flowers from the pea family are typical with blooms that are brilliant yellow with 5 petals and are about 3/4 inch long. Only a few leaves are present. The uppers are single-part, while the lowers are three-part. They have two pointed ends and are deciduous. The stems are dark green and woody. Five green ridges with hairs can be found on young branches. Stems become glabrous and ridges fade away as they develop. Throughout the year, young stems remain green. Seed pods are brown-black, legume-like, flattened, and have hairy edges, and each pod contains numerous seeds.
