Madder root (Rubia Tinctoria) is also known as Dyers madder, rose madder, madder lake. Madder Root is a plant with a powerful main root, from which thick rhizomes depart. Roots and rhizomes are covered with a reddish-brown exfoliating bark. The leaves are dense, stiff, light green, bottom and edges with frequent bent spines, lanceolate or elliptical, up to 10 cm long, up to 3 cm wide. The flowers are small, star-shaped, yellow in the apical and axillary semi-umbrellas. Fruits are juicy black drupes, 5-9 mm long.
