- Myrrh has been used as perfume, incense since antiquity, it is often mentioned in the Bible and still used by many denominations for holy purposes. It is the aromatic resin of certain thorny trees: when slicing their bark, "teardrops" of sap will trickle and dry. Myrrh has a delightful smell but tastes bitter, just as redemption is sweet but bitter the price paid by our Saviour. Myrrh, frankincense and gold were the precious, kingly gifts the Wise Men offered Jesus on his birth

Many Christian churches (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox etc.) still use holy anointing oils, symbol of the Holy Spirit, in important ceremonies. Both the Greek 'Christ' and the Hebrew 'Messiah' mean 'the Anointed One'.
