Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is a cross between a Seville orange and a pear lemon. The fruit is not edible and the tress are grown for the oil expressed from the peel. This oil is used to flavor Earl Grey tea and in many fine fragrances. While bergamot has a beautiful aroma and is perfectly safe when consumed as a flavor, we do not recommend you apply this extract to the skin. The oil has been linked to photo-sensitivity in some people and can cause a skin rash. Pure Bergamot Extract contains ethyl alcohol, water and oil bergamot. It can be used as a flavor baked goods, beverages and ice cream. The Bergamot orange is unrelated to the herb of the same name.
